Family Violence Royal Commission Formally Established

Today the Labor Government formally establish Australia’s first Royal Commission into Family Violence.

Appointed as Commissioner and Chairperson by the Governor, His Excellency, the Hon Alex Chernov AC QC, the Hon Justice Marcia Neave AO together with Deputy Commissioners Patricia Faulkner AO and Tony Nicholson, the Royal Commission has been tasked with providing recommendations that will influence generational change to prevent and respond to family violence. Addressing family violence is a key priority for the Labor Government. We are getting on with the job.

The Andrews Labor Government has provided $40 million for the Royal Commission. Of this, $36 million will go towards the operation of the Royal Commission and $4 million will be provided as an initial investment for support services that experience an increase in demand during the Royal Commission.

Family violence is the most pervasive and common form of violence against women in Victoria. It is the leading cause of death and disability in women under 45. In 2013 alone, there were 44 family-violence related deaths across the state and more than 65’000 family incidents reported to police – a third of all police work.

The Terms of Reference require the Commissioners to find the most effective ways to:
•Prevent family violence
•Improve early intervention to identify and protect those at risk
•Support victims
•Make perpetrators accountable
•Better coordinate responses and shape appropriate attitudes towards women and children.
