Funding To Breathe New Life Into Nagambie Library

Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins has today announced $90,000 toward a major refurbishment of the Nagambie Library.

Officially opening the redeveloped Violet Town Library, also a recipient under the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program, Ms Hutchins said funding for Nagambie would go to creating a modern, inviting and accessible library.

Currently located in a cramped, tired and outdated space, the major refurbishment will improve both the exterior and interior of the library.

The exterior will receive a facelift with fresh paint, landscaping and new visible signage and an update of the outdoor courtyard, while the inside will undergo a refresh, with new mobile shelving introduced to create flexible use of space, as well as the creation of a new children’s area.

Part of a total $110,000 investment, Ms Hutchins said the Andrews Labor Government had changed the Living Libraries guidelines to ensure projects like Nagambie Library would be eligible.

Previous guidelines had required councils to provide significant co-contributions, but after speaking with councillors and mayors, Ms Hutchins removed the requirements for rural councils like Strathbogie Shire.

Ms Hutchins said funding to both the Violet Town and Nagambie Libraries would provide  larger, more modern  facilities that the whole community would be able to enjoy.

Strathbogie Shire Council received $300,000 for the Violet Town Library redevelopment, under the 2014 Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.

The redevelopment has allowed the existing library to be moved to prime street frontage, providing an inviting and accessible community facility.

The works have also increased floor space to nearly 200m2, better access to technology including wifi, a dedicated children’s space and access to meeting areas and quiet reading spaces.

The total cost was $460,000, with Strathbogie Shire Council contributing $145,000 and the Violet Town Action Group contributing $15,000 towards the project.
