Giving Sons And Daughters Of The West A Big Boost

The Andrews Labor Government is giving a big boost to a flagship program helping more local men and women enjoy the benefits of healthy and active living and tackle issues like mental health.

Minister for Health Jill Hennessy today announced a $800,000 boost for the Sons and Daughters of the West initiative, run by the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation.

Sons and Daughters of the West is all about targeting the unique social and healthcare needs of people living in Melbourne’s booming and culturally diverse western suburbs.

It offers free programs that promote good mental health, better nutrition, increased physical activity, gender equality and respectful relationships to prevent family violence.

The program is a proven winner when it comes to improving mental health among men and women – reducing loneliness, and giving locals the skills and resources they need to exercise more and make healthier choices for them and their families.

Sons of the West has now been running for four years, and offers men’s health and behaviour change programs at 17 sites across Melbourne’s west.

In 2017, Daughters of the West was introduced for the first time, and now offers programs in Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton and Wyndham, as well as Ballarat and Maryborough.

The Labor Government’s funding boost will mean 800 people will be able to access the life-changing program over the next three years.
