New Guide To Help Victorians Chart A Boating Industry Career
Minister for Training and Skills, Steve Herbert, has launched a new guide to help people find jobs in Victoria’s boating and marine industry.
Mr Herbert said the industry is primed for growth, particularly in the area of recreational boating, yet few Victorians are aware of the range of potential careers.
Victoria’s boating industry contributes $4.5 billion a year to the state’s economy and employs 17,700 people.
The new guide details the training, skills and qualities needed for jobs ranging from boatbuilding and components manufacturing to marina management and super-yacht building and servicing.
Victoria has one of the oldest marine manufacturing industries in Australia and is home to prestigious brands including Bar Crusher Boats, Bass Strait Boats, Caribbean, Edencraft, Haines Hunter, Hart Marine and Whittley.
Public TAFE institutes provide a range of specialised trade certificates related to boat manufacturing, services and products, while other trade qualifications are also utilised by the industry, such as automotive electricians, cabinet makers, riggers, engineers and fabricators.
Specialist qualifications offered at TAFEs include Certificate III in Marine Craft Construction at GOTAFE, Certificate III in Marine Technology at both Chisholm and Kangan institutes, and Certificate III in Automotive and Marine Trimming Technology at Holmesglen.
The Andrews Labor Government’s 2015-16 Victorian Budget provided a $350 million boost in funding to TAFE institutes, supporting them to invest in new facilities and deliver more training that leads to jobs.
