Traditional Owners Sought For Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council

Victorian Traditional Owners are invited to apply for one of two positions available on the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Natalie Hutchins announced today.

The Council is Australia’s only statutory decision-making authority with membership comprised exclusively of Traditional Owners.

Council members provide advice to the Minister on cultural heritage matters, appoint Registered Aboriginal Parties and promote awareness and understanding of Victoria’s rich Aboriginal heritage.

The Council is also continuing its vital work in developing an Aboriginal Ancestral Remains process that ensures Traditional Owners are at the centre of decision-making.

Victorian residents with traditional or familial links to an area in Victoria, extensive knowledge of Aboriginal cultural heritage, and time to commit to council duties are encouraged to apply before 26 October 2015.

Women who meet the eligibility criteria are particularly encouraged to apply. The Andrews Labor Government is committed to ensuring gender equality, with at least 50 per cent of appointments to boards to be women.
