Victoria’s A-League Champions Celebrated

Minister for Sport, John Eren has congratulated Victoria’s A-League soccer champions, Melbourne Victory, at a Victorian Government reception.

Title winner for a third time, the Victory denied arch rival Sydney FC to claim the silverware on Sunday in front of a capacity AAMI Park crowd.

Thousands of Victorians packed nearby Gosch’s Paddock to watch the home side triumph, and many came to cheer the champions at Federation Square at a ceremony on Monday.

Mr Eren joined coach Kevin Muscat, captain Mark Milligan and the championship team this morning to help Melbourne Victory celebrate the history-making triumph.

He labelled the Victory’s finals campaign a fitting finale to the season, particularly after eliminating local rival, Melbourne City in the semi-final and traditional foe, Sydney FC in the decider.

While Melbourne Victory can now make its claim as the best A-League club, it has long been the biggest. Bumper crowds at the club’s AAMI Park and Etihad Stadium home matches are further proof nobody gets behind their sporting teams quite like Melbourne.

Fans of the world game are in for another treat when a trio of international soccer giants go head-to-head at the MCG. Manchester City, Real Madrid and A.S. Roma will all feature in July’s International Champions Cup at the MCG.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Sport, John Eren

“Melbourne Victory set the pace all season long, and didn’t put a foot wrong in the finals. Kevin, Mark and the club have done their supporters proud.”

“Soccer fans will get another chance to witness greatness when three giants of European football go head-to-head at the MCG in July. It will be another chance for Melbourne to confirm its status as a major events leader.”
